School year to end May 25, start Aug. 15

Vance County Schools’ makeup day for the St. Patrick’s Day snowfall is set for Wednesday, May 25, pending Board of Education approval.

Schools Superintendent Norm Shearin said it was an easy decision. School already is scheduled to be in session Monday and Tuesday that week. “That allows us to take the exam off of Monday and make it Tuesday and Wednesday.”

He sent out the recommendation last week for responses, but he said all six recommendations sent to him were to add May 25.

“It’s a no-brainer,” Shearin said.

No makeup day will be official until the Board of Education approves the change at its next meeting, April 11.

Graduation for the two high schools will be Saturday, May 28, so students who avoid summer school will be done for the year before Memorial Day, which is May 30.

Teachers’ last workday will be Friday, June 3.

For those planning ahead, students will be due in school for the new year on Monday, Aug. 15.
