Faith Summit produces prayer meeting

One of the immediate effects of Saturday’s Vance County Faith Summit was an agreement among participants to meet regularly for sessions of interdenominational prayer crossing lines of race and class. The first session will be Thursday at noon at West Hills Presbyterian Church on Ruin Creek Road.

Here’s an announcement from the pastor of West Hills, the Rev. Doug Addington:

Does prayer make a difference in our daily affairs? Can it change our circumstances? Can a group of people meeting to pray for our community have any positive influence on the difficult issues of crime, violence and poverty? Yes. Both Scripture and history bear witness to the power of prayer.

A few years ago, the Herald-Sun was reporting on Durham’s reduction in crime. While many factors influenced this change, one local pastor identified prayer as a significant contribution. Several local ministers had been meeting regularly to pray that God would bring about positive change in the city, and the lower crime rates indicated their prayers were being answered.

A similar group that crosses denominational and racial lines is gathering in Henderson to seek the Lord for our community. Our first meeting will be Thursday at noon. We will meet at West Hills Presbyterian Church, located at 1354 Ruin Creek Road. We invite all local ministers, as well as all members of our community, to join us.

Our next meeting will be held in the evening so those who cannot attend during the day may participate.

Please consider giving up your lunch hour Thursday for the good of our community. For further information, call Doug Addington at 492-3004.
