Economic Partnership flexes its muscles

Looking for a sign of how powerful and/or important the Henderson-Vance Economic Partnership will be when it emerges from the shadows soon to announce its chairman and vice chair? Thursday night’s planned budget session for the city offered a hint.

The City Council pushed its Finance and Intergovernmental Relations Committee meeting back to 7 p.m. instead of 6 because the Economic Partnership already had a meeting set for 5:30. Mayor Clem Seifert and council members John Wester and Bernard Alston weren’t going to skip the meeting of that private, nonprofit group.

In the end, the FAIR Committee adjourned at 9:30 without having a chance to take up the budget.

As for Vance County, the Board of Commissioners set up a potential conflict by scheduling its budget presentation for 5 p.m. But the meeting lasted only 20 minutes, allowing Commissioner Terry Garrison to get to the Economic Partnership’s session.
