Man is thrown to his death in U.S. 1 wreck

A Raleigh man was killed Thursday night when he was thrown from his SUV in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 1 Bypass near South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mark Gott, 38, was driving south between Andrews Avenue and Vanco Mill Road when he apparently lost control of the 1997 Ford Explorer and ran off the road shortly after 9 p.m., according to a news release from the Henderson Police Department, which handles highway accidents within the city limits.

Gott, who was not wearing a seat belt, was flung from the Explorer as it flipped multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle.

Officer Joseph Amos was dispatched to the accident at 9:09 and now is investigating the case.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Gott was speeding, possibly more than 100 mph. The investigation is continuing into contributing factors.
