Friday’s open line
Well, the city’s Finance Department took another loss yesterday with a retirement announced to begin in two weeks. In related news, according to the Daily Dispatch, Acting City Manager Mark Warren must sign or stamp each outgoing check. Is the city getting a handle on its finances, or have the real woes only begun? This or any other topic is yours to discuss on today’s open line.
Thursday’s open line
To mangle an old Chinese proverb: He who strikes the first blow [in the form of profanity and personal attack] admits that he [or she] has lost the argument. If that doesn’t suit you, try this Oscar Wilde quote: “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” What do you think?
Wednesday’s open line
The FAIR Committee is meeting today at 11:00 a.m. in the City Hall Conference Room. If you go, let us know what happened. The Daily Dispatch reported yesterday that 13 file drawers have been discovered empty since Eric Williams was removed from his post as City Manager. What do you think this means? This space is yours to speak your mind on this or any topic. Have at.

Stanley “Tookie” Williams, co-founder of the notorious “Crips” gang, is scheduled to be executed early Tuesday if not granted a stay of execution. As always, the floor is open to debate.

A wise question at a job interview: “What happened to the last person in this position?” (If only we had asked it before taking this gig!) Now that the story of happenings in our fair city has graced the local (Raleigh) evening news, will Henderson be hard-pressed for qualified applicants to its top administrative job? You be the judge on our Friday open line.

Tuesday’s open line
Now that the city is in the market for a new manager, what should we be looking for? Is a city manager an innovator, always looking for ways to improve the running of the city, or should he or she be a custodian, simply executing the will of the council? How much autonomy should the manager have? As always, the floor is open to debate.
City terminates manager’s contract
In a five-to-three vote, the new Henderson City Council declined to re-appoint City Manager Eric Williams.
