Arrest made in homicide case


The following press release was received from the Henderson Police Department:

At 11:05 p.m. on Monday night, January 23, 2006, medical responders and Henderson police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Hamilton Street upon report of a man down in the roadway. The victim, an adult man, was found to be unresponsive in the street. An ambulance transported the victim to Maria Parham Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The victim has been identified as Karl Hines, age 51. Police records listed several addresses for Mr. Hines in Henderson and Vance County.

Kelvin Spencer Wiggins, Jr., 18, of 409 Oakhill Street, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder in the death of Karl Hines. He was taken into custody this afternoon by the Henderson Police Department following an investigation by police detectives and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Preliminary reports from the State Medical Examiner’s Office indicate that the victim had been beaten about the head.

Wiggins is being held in the Vance County Jail without bond pending a hearing next week.

This investigation has not yet been concluded and additional charges may be forthcoming.
