Tickets available for Critic’s Choice Series

Tickets are on sale for the fall Critic’s Choice Series at Marketplace Cinema.

The series, which runs for 12 consecutive weeks starting Aug. 28, will feature a showing of one film per week at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The series, with fall and spring versions, began in 2003 and has been noted as a cultural high-water mark for Henderson. The popular series features independent and art-house films that usually only are screened in big cities. Past selections have ranged from Wonderland, a gritty look at an L.A. slaughter connected to fallen porn star John C. Holmes, to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. The series is particularly good for seeing Oscars contenders; past nominees and winners that have been Critic’s Choice picks include Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, Sideways, and Finding Neverland.

According to Nancy Jo Smith, the owner of Marketplace Cinema and originator of the series, “the films are a nice diversion from mainstream films.”

Season tickets are available at the theater for $42, making the per-movie cost only $3.50. Season-ticket holders get a $2 discount at the concession stand on purchases of at least $5 when they attend series screenings.

For customers who are unable to commit to the entire season, admission at the door is $5 per film.

Marketplace Cinema will hold a kickoff reception for past series patrons and their guests from 4 to 5 p.m. on the series’ opening day, Aug. 28. That event will give people who have enjoyed the series an opportunity to share it with friends who aren’t familiar with it.

The first four films in this fall’s series are Kinky Boots, A Prairie Home Companion, Thank You for Smoking (comedy-dramas) and Wordplay (a documentary). Detailed synopses on the movies may be viewed on Marketplace Cinema’s Web site at www.marketplacecinemas.com.

Smith notes that the first four films of the series are selected by the owner. The remaining eight films will be selected by vote of season-ticket holders.
