To the editor: Unfair tax system

This letter is for the purpose of informing all citizens of the City of Henderson of the unfair tax system which has burdened us for many years.

As most of you know, Vance County and the City of Henderson are partners in a number of projects such as the Library, Recreational Complex and the 911 Center.

What is unfair about this, you may ask? Well 36 % of the taxpayers (city residents) are paying 80 % of the taxes needed to fund these joint projects. This comes about because city taxpayers also pay county taxes. Therefore, in reality a joint project labeled as 50/50 is closer to 80/20 because the city taxpayer pays twice.

While I represent Ward 2 on the City Council, I feel a deep obligation to all citizens of Henderson. In my opinion we must find a solution to this inequity.

The reasons given by some county commissioners for this inequity are: (1) The city was created voluntarily and the county was created by charter; therefore, the city should pay more. (2) City residents are aware of the heavier burden and accept it; therefore, it is OK. (3) Sharing of resources represents a savings for the city and county. This is not correct! Only the county is saving.

I am willing to discuss this matter with any individual or any group. My home phone number is 438-3578. If requested, I will be glad to speak to civic organizations or neighborhood associations.
