Hicks, 18, of 327 Davis Street, was charged with attempted murder and placed in the Vance County Jail in lieu of $75,000 secured bond.

In a brief telephone interview, City Manager Jerry Moss stated that he will take any action to assure that citizens are safe. He said that he plans to set up a meeting in the morning to review the event.

Moss also stated that a security person was present at the complex at the time of the incident.

The following press release was received from Moss this morning:

“Henderson is saddened this morning concerning the violent shooting that occurred at our Aycock Recreation Complex last night. It is so tragic that the problems besetting our entire community have now spilled over to one of our recreation facilities. It is alarming that a family-oriented facility has been the scene of such disturbing and unwarranted violence.

The city has measures in place to provide for the safety of the patrons at our facilities but it is now obvious these measures will have to be reevaluated and strengthened and we will begin to address this problem immediately. The safety and well—being of all our citizens in Henderson is of the utmost importance to us all. My office will be in constant contact with the police and others in this investigation and push for the strongest charges possible for those involved in this violent shooting.

I want to assure the public that we will do everything necessary to evaluate the safeguards at the recreation complex and other facilities and make recommendations for any security measures that are needed at once. Our goal is to maintain the Aycock Recreation Complex as a safe, family-oriented facility where all the citizens of Henderson and Vance County can enjoy sports and recreation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved in this tragic event last night and for our community as well.”
