State Board of Ed. meets next week


The State Board of Education will meet next week, May 1-3, in the Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Tuesday, May 1, 12:00 p.m. -2:45 p.m.

The Globally Competitive Students Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Kathy Taft and Tricia Willoughby, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on supplemental education service providers for 2007-08, middle grades education and high school graduation requirements, and personal financial literacy. Discussion items include Future-Ready High School Core Curriculum Framework and proposed standards for the Standard Course of Study in American Sign Language Secondary Level.

3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Board members will attend required State Ethics Training in the 7th Floor Board Lounge, Education Building.

5:30 p.m.

Board members are invited to attend the 2007-08 North Carolina Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony being held at the Embassy Suites in Cary.

Wednesday, May 2, 8:30 -10:00 a.m.

The Business/Finance and Advocacy Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Wayne McDevitt and John Tate, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building.

Agenda items include action on a request by Pine Lake Preparatory Charter School to relocate to Mecklenburg County from Iredell County and discussion of utilization of the State Board Reserve for innovative/special projects and federal reauthorization of ESEA/No Child Left Behind.

10:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The 21st Century Professionals Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Michelle Howard-Vital and Shirley Harris, will meet in Room 504 (Video-Conferencing Center), Education Building. Agenda items include action on recommendations from the Advisory Board on requests for exception from teacher licensing requirements and discussion of the response to the Report on Professional Development from the Center for School Leadership Development, revision of standards for teacher evaluation, and proposed standards for licensure in American Sign Language.

10:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Leadership for Innovation Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Melissa Bartlett and Tom Speed, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on waivers for educational purposes under the Innovative Education Initiatives Act, renewal recommendations of Alternative School Model Charter Schools and discussion of a renewal recommendation for less than 10 years for the Academy of Moore County. Committee members also will receive an update on the Turnaround Schools.

1:15 p.m. -­ 4:30 p.m.

The Board will meet in whole in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. The Board’s afternoon session will focus on its Information Agenda including a discussion on the Disadvantaged Student Supplemental Fund Pilot Evaluation.

Committee chairs will present reports to members summarizing discussion of their various agenda items.

5:30 p.m.

Board members will have dinner in the 7th Floor Board Lounge, Education Building, where they will hear a presentation by Dr. John Bransford from the University of Washington on “The Future of Formative Assessment.”

Thursday, May 3, 8:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.

Board members will recognize Blue Ribbon Schools award recipients from Brawley Middle School (Iredell-Statesville Schools), Davis Drive Elementary (Wake County Schools), Eastover Central Elementary (Cumberland County Schools), Laurel Hill Elementary (Scotland County Schools), and W.A. Bess Elementary (Gaston County Schools); Southeast Raleigh High (Wake County Schools) Band Director Clifton Scott; and out-going State Board Senior Student Advisor Melissa McCoy.

They also will receive the Chairman’s and State Superintendent’s reports, take action on agenda items as appropriate, and receive a progress report on the Future-Ready Students Plan and Implementation.
