State Board of Ed. meets next week


The State Board of Education will meet next week, July 31 through August 2, in the Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Following are highlights of the Board’s agenda.

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Globally Competitive Students Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Kathy Taft and Tricia Willoughby, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on the K-2 Literacy Assessment Task Force recommendations and recommended interim academic achievement cut scores for the NCEXTEND2 OCS assessments in English and mathematics. Members also will receive updates on the graduation project and the high school accountability model.

5:30 p.m.

Board members will have a dinner meeting in Room 150 of the Education Building where they will receive a report from NCDPI research interns.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 8:45 – 10:15 a.m.

The Business/Finance and Advocacy Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Wayne McDevitt and John Tate, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on a request from Clinton City, Newton-Conover City, Beaufort County, Chatham County, Northampton County, Warren County and Wayne County for the flexible use of mentor funds, and updates on NC WISE, legislative activity and the Connectivity Project.

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The 21st Century Professionals Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Shirley Harris and Eulada Watt, will meet in Room 504 (Video-Conferencing Center), Education Building. Agenda items include action on proposed standards for the approval of pilot programs for the licensing of lateral entry teachers and discussion of a proposed revision of the standards for the evaluation of superintendents and job descriptions and salary upgrades for occupational therapist assistants and physical therapist assistants.

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Leadership for Innovation Committee, co-chaired by State Board members Melissa Bartlett and Tom Speed, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include discussion of a name change request for New Century Charter High School and updates on the Blue Ribbon Committee for Charter Schools and high school turnaround.

12:15 p.m.

Board members will honor teachers with 50 years of teaching service at a luncheon in Room 150 of the Education Building.

1:30 – 4:45 p.m.

New Board members will be sworn in and teachers with 50 years of teaching service will be recognized. Board members will then receive committee chair reports.

5:30 p.m.

Board members will hold a dinner meeting in Room 150 of the Education Building where they will meet with representatives of the UNC-General Administration.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 7:45 – 10:30 a.m.

7:45 a.m.

Board members will hold a breakfast meeting with delegates of the Beijing Association of Science and Technology in Room 150 of the Education Building.

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Board members will recognize their new advisors Dr. Shirley Prince (Superintendent Advisor), Craig Hill (Wachovia Principal of the Year Advisor) and James Bell (2007-08 NC Teacher of the Year Advisor). They also will receive the Chairman’s, State Superintendent’s, and Deputy State Superintendent’s reports, take action on agenda items as appropriate, and approve their 2008 meeting schedule.
