Show, Shine, Shag, & Dine a success

Drag racing enthusiasts enjoy Henderson

Saturday featured some of the finest drag racers and muscle cars in the United States and Canada.

A huge crowd of car enthusiasts made downtown Garnett Street look more like the grand concourse at Disneyworld than the usual light traffic of Saturday morning in Henderson’s business district.

The music of not one, but two bands filled the air along with the aroma of food vendors and, of course, throaty engines and exhaust fumes.

One of the featured events of the Show, Shine, Shag, and Dine event was the unveiling of the completely restored “Tin Indian” driven by the legendary Johnny Rocca. The first Blown Pro Mod, 1933 Willys was restored and unveiled Saturday.

The owner Aaron Pilatzke brought the car from Canada to Henderson. Johnny Rocca was present to witness the event and to reunite with fellow racers and fans.

The “Tazmanian Devil” was also unveiled at the show on Saturday. Nancy Lopez, the daughter of Charlie Dodge, who originally built the car, was on hand for the emotional reunion.

A very race piece of America’s Pro Stock drag racing history owned by Charles Blackenship was not only on display by for sale in Henderson in the form of one of the original three “Motown Missiles”. Dandy “Dick” Landy and Kent Fuller designed and built one of those cars for Irv Beringhaus in late 1972.

If you’d like to see more cars like it, here’s the show schedule.

Of course, no car show in Henderson would be complete without an exhibition of Corbitt Trucks. See video of Charles Powell, the head of the Corbitt Preservation Association, here.
