Davis chosen as mayor pro-tempore

At Monday night’s regular meeting of the Henderson City Council, veteran Council member Lonnie Davis was unanimously chosen as Mayor Pro-Tempore in a unanimous vote.

Council member Garry Daeke made the motion to elect Davis to the position. There were no competing motions for any other member of the Council.

Daeke called Davis “a mentor” during short remarks which praised Davis’ work on the Council.

The Mayor Pro-Tempore’s only duty is to preside at Council meetings when the Mayor is unable to do so. The Mayor Pro-Tempore, like the elected Mayor, is unable to cast a vote when presiding over a meeting except in the case of a tie vote.

The 2005-2007 Council chose Ranger Wilkerson as its Mayor Pro-Tempore during its first meeting on December 5, 2005. Wilkerson was then charged as a “committee of one” to assign members to the various Council committees. There has been no indication that the current council will form committees in that manner, or, indeed, how committees will eventually be decided.
