Wednesday’s open line

I have this theory about school uniforms:

Those who insist that they express their “individuality” through how they dress are, in fact, the worst kind of conformists.

How, you ask? Simple. Except for the military or the run-of-the-mill religious cult (and I certainly don’t equate the two), the majority of people dress as individuals. They get embarrassed if they accidentally wear the same shirt, pants, shoes, or even the same color. The desire to dress “differently” is, in fact, an expression of a desire to be the same as everyone else.

Those of us who advocate uniforms, on the other hand, express our individuality in our desire to look the same. How is that not a contradiction? That’s easy. We know that our uniqueness is expressed in our words and deeds, not in superficialities like clothing.
