City rules for loose leaf collection

In an effort to keep the citizens of Henderson informed on leaf collection procedures, the Public Works Department is reminding everyone of the rules related to leaf collection.

Loose leaves must be raked to the edge of the road or curbing. Do not put leaves in the street and block the flow of traffic. Loose leaves must be free of sticks, trash and other foreign objects.

Residents wishing to bag leaves must put them in clear plastic bags. The city is selling clean plastic bags — ten bags are $2.25 and can be picked up at the Operations Center (900 South Beckford Drive) or the Water Billing Office (134 Rose Avenue).

The City has three trucks with vacuum machines operating from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Trucks are running on a bi-weekly rotation within the city to collect loose leaves.

Bagged leaves are being collected weekly with a separate truck. Please remember that bagged leaves have to be opened and dumped into city trucks for disposal at the county landfill. If bags are cut or torn open, they will be removed by city staff and disposed of at the transfer station. If the bags are still intact, they will be left at the edge of the yard to be used again by citizens.

The Public Works staff is working extremely hard to remove leaves as fast as possible. If you have not raked your yard, please do so as soon as possible. Remember loose leaf collection ends the middle of January and after that all leaves have to be bagged for collection.

The leaf collection schedule is being posted on the City website. Should there be any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Public Works Department at 252.431.6115 or 252.431.6118.
