Teachers: Win solar panels for your school

Want to win solar panels for your middle or high school?

Some bright ideas will be taking shape in schools across the Carolinas this year as part of the Progress Energy SolarSchools program — a partnership between Progress Energy Carolinas and the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation.

The new hands-on educational program for middle and high school students supports innovative ways to use and conserve energy and encourages students to develop innovative energy solutions. Schools will compete to win solar panels to be installed on their schools’ campus. Internet monitoring equipment will be installed so that students can view the panels’ real-time electricity production. Educational materials will be provided to teachers to help the winning schools integrate renewable energy learning opportunities into the classroom.

A note about the timeline:

First, eligible schools should complete an intent to compete form and submit it by August 15, 2009.

Next, schools will confirm viability as a solar site by completing the solar site assessment and submitting it by August 30, 2009.

The program application is due on October 2, 2009.

*Only middle and high schools served by Progress Energy Carolinas are eligible to participate in the program.
