Woman shot by deputy on Welcome Avenue

*** BREAKING NEWS ***

Home in Henderson has obtained an unconfirmed report of an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Welcome Avenue in Vance County at approximately 8:15 p.m. this evening.

According to a confidential source, a resident of Welcome Avenue was shot in the shoulder by a Vance County Sheriff’s Office deputy when she refused to surrender a firearm to law enforcement officers.

The name of the officer as well as the woman who was shot is being withheld pending confirmation of this report.

The woman who was shot was taken to the Maria Parham Medical Center. Her condition is unknown.

The situation began when Vance County Animal Control officers were called to a residence on Welcome Avenue. For reasons which are not known, animal control officers attempted to remove a canine from the property, presumably belonging to the resident. The resident turned a firearm on animal control officers when they attempted to take the dog. At that point, law enforcement officers were called to the scene.

An investigation is underway into the shooting at this time. As is standard in the case of shootings involving law enforcement officers, the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate. Currently, Chief Deputy Maj. Charles Sparrow is in charge at the scene.

The informant noted that Vance County Sheriff Peter White was not on scene.

It was reported to Home in Henderson that paramedics were called back to the scene on a report of a 57 year-old man being hit by a car.
