The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) released preliminary results for Vance County Schools towards Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) yesterday.
AYP is a goal set by the federal government in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 that requires schools to show a proficiency rating on standardized testing for both the entire school population and subgroups as defined by the act.
Proficiency is determined by the percentage of each group that achieves a “passing” mark on standardized testing. If one or more groups does not achieve the required number of students who pass the test (in the case of North Carolina, the tests are the End-of-Grade tests for elementary and middle schools and the End-of-Course test for high school), the entire school is deemed to have not made AYP.
Schools that do not make AYP are subject to various sanctions under the law.
