Copper theft from cell tower


On May 27, 2010 around 2:52 a.m. an officer of the Henderson Police Department working in his assigned zone received a call to investigate a loud noise in the area of Raleigh Road.

Upon further investigation by the officer, a suspicious vehicle was located as it moved from the former location of Pacific Coats Feathers on Miriam Street.

The officer conducted an investigatory stop on the vehicle. During the investigation, the officer located copper wiring of a value in excess of $4,000 in the vehicle.

The area was searched and it was determined that the copper wiring was removed from a cell phone tower located at 220 Miriam Street in Henderson. Subsequently, the three occupants of the vehicle were arrested and charged with felony injury to wires and other fixtures of telephone, telegraph and electric-power companies.

The cell phone tower from which the alleged theft occurred is used by Alltel, Verizon, AT&T, and Progress Energy.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators are in communication with other agencies with similar open cases and more charges may be pending.
