Council declines truck stop zoning amendment

Working from a map prepared for members of the Henderson City Council to illustrate where trucks stops would be permitted, Planning & Community Development Director Erris Dunston described the locations for council member during Monday’s short regular meeting.

According to Dunston, truck stops would have been permitted on Raleigh Road, south of Henderson in the Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) east of US 1. They would also have been permitted in an area on North US 1 west of the highway. Another permitted zone was off of I85 west behind Ross Mill Road.

Before the vote, member Garry Daeke stated, “I don’t feel very comfortable with it.”

The motion failed 4-2, with members Lonnie Davie and George Daye casting the only two affirmative votes. Members Sara Coffey and Mary Emma Evans were not present for the vote. It was stated at the beginning of the meeting that Coffey had been admitted to the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Durham.

No explanation was given for Evans’ absence.

According to statements made earlier by Dunston, the reason for the proposed changes to Henderson zoning ordinances was because Henderson’s zoning does not currently specifically address truck stops and/or transfer stations. Apparently, the exploration of changes to Henderson’s zoning began on the basis of a telephone inquiry about truck stops in the city so that the city would have a response in place for the next person to inquire.

On May 25, 2010, Dunston told the council that the person who made the original inquiry is “long gone”.
