The first day of June and it’s already targeting a 96 degree high for today. Be sure you stay cool. My dryer broke over the weekend so yesterday I bought a clothes line for about 20 bucks and hooked it up myself. The high temps should get the clothes dry in about 5 minutes I figure. And for free.
John Edwards is making the news again with prosecutors and Mr. Edwards arguing over the definition of the words donated and gift.
What’s on your mind today?
What is the status of the break-in at a local pharmacy? The one where the underpaid, understaffed, undertrained Henderson police department responded to over the past weekend? The one where police checked out the alarm, seeing no one they re-set the alarm and left. Only to learn the burglars were still inside. To paraphrase Lewis Edwards, ‘We get from government what we are willing to pay for.’
you can also get clothes drying racks at walmart and lowe’s, they work great. i have been using them for about 10 years, in the summer, i place them outside and in the winter they are in my bathroom, love them and wouldnt trade them for anything.
Does John Edwards think he’s smarter than anyone else? He went to see Bunny Mellon recently and they “visited”, but did not discuss the Bunny Money–right!
Which pharmacy was burglarized?
@ Anonymous – I think “undertrained” is untrue. As a police department accredited by CALEA, the training is actually more extensive than that of surrounding departments.
Jason, excuse me, the Henderson Police Department is undertrained! Two most recent examples of undertrained officers include a shooting in the hospital waiting room and the response to a burglary at a pharmacy. There are certificate mills for just about anything you care to get a certificate. The actions of the “certified” professional is more telling than to tell me that the department got a plaque from some quasi-official sounding certificate mill.
To paraphrase Lewis Edwards, ‘We get from government what we are willing to pay for.’
While I have not heard about the pharmacy situation I did read where the SBI cleared a local officer in a shooting over at MPH. It appears that his traning is what saved the situation from potentially getting much worse. Fault does not lie with the department in the fact they are underfunded. The HPD is an example of an agency that is working with what resources they have and not letting the thoughts of what they do not have blur their vision.
I think we have a fine Police Department. They do a great job considering the situation. They do have stumbling blocks along the way though.
underfunded? In what way? They have state of the art equipment, new vehicles, etc. due to drug interdiction $$. Overtime pay from grants, and now appropriate pay for every single one. it looks like they will be paid fairly and well equipped. i expect they will continue to provide professional service to the public.
Mingo, how does the officer pay for our local police force fare versus other towns in the state? More, less or equal?
Just like our local Fire Department, the HPD is considered a training ground, a place to get some experience so you can move on to a position elsewhere with better pay. Untill we get some revenue flowing in this town by way of more/better employment opportunities, we will still remain a training ground. You can work all kinds of cases here in Henderson as an officer where you would not be able to do so elsewhere due to the level of experienced officers working the higher profile matters.Just stating some facts. Its another bi-product of a poor town.
I doubt we can get those all important jobs with a tax rate the way it is.
Officer pay in Henderson will now be equal to almost every surrounding department, with the 20% pay increase. I did not know that the fire department was a training ground for others, havnt heard their leadership speak to that in the media.
I read an article week before last I believe where a member of the FD asked for the council to reconsider using monies that was to give the HPD officer’s a raise and spread it around. That member spoke along side of people who decried the rate hike at the rec complex and those that opposed the cutting of the code enforcement budget. Chief Sidwell is not from here and does not seem to let that stand in his way. The guy has his own principals to stand upon and I like that. He uses the local media to talk not only about what is great about his department but what needs help or where they are falling short. Perhaps other department heads need to take note?
Couldn’t agree more Mojo. I read the same article, and it would seem that the rank and file of the HFD were out there all alone, still trying to figure that out.
I am happy to know we are on the same page Mingo. Here’s to positive discourse! I was wondering the same thing, why was the head of the HFD not up there speaking on behalf of his employee’s for the money? Like you, I am left to wonder as well I suppose. Hope you have a nice weekend!
