The Governor is expected to Veto another bill this week, the new voter identification bill that requires a photo ID to be presented by a voter during the voting process.
Please be informed that the County’s Public Safety Committee is scheduled to meet tonight, Monday, June 20 at 4:00 p.m. in the County Manager’s Office.
Also, Chairman Eddie L. Wright has called a special meeting for Tuesday, June 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Conference Room, Vance County Administration Building, 122 Young Street, Henderson, NC. They plan to Hold Public Hearing for CDBG Grant Application, Adopt FY 2011-12 Budget Ordinance and Authorize Year-End Closeouts.
All who are here and dissatisfied with District Attorney’s office did you read the article on the front page of Sunday’s paper? We have an experience weakened understaffed District Attorney’s office because of the politically driven slash and burn budget philosophy. Locally we lack funding for wages to adequately staff the District Attorney’s office; yet the County Commissioners want to spend at least $100,000 annually for a public relations (economic development) director. Could that same $100,000 been used to retain some expertise in the District Attorney’s office to more efficiently prosecute murderers and thieves? The District Attorney’s office had to reduce services that would help citizens while the Commissioners were able to find $10,000 in the budget to fly off Oregon for some conference. All while the County’s major industry, Section 8 housing, expands bringing more business to the District Attorney’s office.
The County Commissioners are unbelievable–HOW do they think their trip will change the physical and financial mess we are in?
It just goes on and on.
In the age of online education and business meetings, it does seem wasteful to travel to another state for a conference. Most of us can’t even take a vacation out of town, much less the state. I’m fairly fed up with the entitlements of our elected representatives, top to bottom. They need to live at our level a year or two and then they’d have a much better perspective on what we really need. We have only ourselves to blame for our uninformed voting habits (or not voting at all).
Early voting should be dropped–in my opinion people are voting and voting often. The elected officials here for the most part are in the upper income bracket or in the lower income bracket. Middle income tax payers get the shaft.
People should have to show photo identification in order to vote.
I’m not sure about photo ID to vote. it sounds good, but….
My dad is now in a rest home. He no longer drives, so he has no current picture ID. He’s voted forever, paid a gazillion $$ in taxes, fought in WWII…… So I have to take him out of the home to get a new photo ID? it will be difficult enough to get him out to vote.
I understand somewhat why this seems like a good idea to some folks, but its intent is just mean spirited. This new leadership in the Legislature, like those before, looks to keep control. I don’t like the idea of suppressing the vote to do it though. Won’t the re-districting be enough for them to maintain power and control?
If the commissioners make that trip and you taxpayers are footing the expense, make sure upon their return that they submit in public an expense statement in its entirety for each commissioner making the trip.
That is the way it would be in most counties Mr. Oliver–as I know you are aware–but this place is a whole nuther breed of cat. Let’s go one better and send them off with one-way reservations!
The following are workshop topics listed on the National Association of Counties’ 2011 Annual Conference and Exposition Workshop Grid:
How Am I Going to Retire
Get Kids Involved in County Government
NACo’s Prescription Discount Card Program: Too Good to be True? No! It Lives Up to its Billing
Lights, Camera – Gulp!
Are these some of the topics Commissioner Hester believes the benefits far outweigh the costs?
Commissioner Hester there is not one workshop of the 35 listed in any way relates to our County’s number one growth industry, Section 8 Housing. Even the Program At a Glance is devoid of any topic regarding our number one industry.
I understand the need to attend conferences. What I am having trouble understanding is that we did not have $10,000 for administration staffing at the District Attorney’s office yet we have $10,000 so Commissioner Hester can attend his fourth conference.
For those so inclined using the Internet go to NACO.org to see what Commission Hester has found that he says the unexplained benefits far outweigh the known costs.
