Tuesday Open Line

Today we release a story regarding two smug looking illegal drug manufactures in Henderson last week that turned up 164 doses of heroin to be sold, in addition to 1.6 grams of crack cocaine.  Also during the last week, at the North Carolina State Fair, 12 people were arrested, not just 12 people but those 12 people were actually employees at the fair, mostly running midway games and sold concessions. Deputies seized about $10,000 in drugs in the investigation, including about $4,000 in oxycodone and $3,000 in heroin, Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.  “We had heroin, crack cocaine, powdered cocaine, marijuana,” he said. “I don’t know whether heroin is coming back or what it is, but, yes (finding that) did surprise me.”

Now, a few things come to mind here regarding the fair workers.  Should the company that hired the workers have performed drug tests?  Should they be required by the state department of labor to provide drug test results before allowing workers to work the fair as part of their inspection?  Should the state cancel the contract with the company Powers Great American Midways as a violation of their contract?  Now, what I don’t know is if the people arrested were employed by that company, as luckily no ride operators were involved in the drug ordeal.  It’s possible the midway games and concessions are not part of the Powers Great American Midways troupe and are independent operators or part of another division.  Hence, the state DoL couldn’t inspect them like they do the rides.

Regardless, heroin does seem to be on a slight comeback, and unfortunately we’re seeing it here in Vance County.
