NC Cooperative Extension Updates

WEEKLY TIPS FROM THE HOME & GARDEN SHOW ON WIZS
1. If cole crops like broccoli are winding down take them out of the garden.
2. Mulch around young trees to protect them from lawn mower damage.
3. Check squash for squash bugs. Egg casings can be scraped off by hand.
4. Riding lawn mowers are made to carry only one person, the driver. Just say “no” to extra riders.
5. When harvesting vegetables place them in the shade to keep them fresher.
6. Stay on top of weed control.  They rob your plants of water and nutrients, and can harbor insects and disease.
7. Maintain moisture levels of plants in hanging containers, as they dry out quickly in warm temperatures.
8. Japanese beetles are here, hand pick them off your roses and other plants.
9. Use soaker hoses rather than overhead irrigation to prevent foliage diseases.
10. Inspect shade trees to make sure branches are fully leafed out.  Bare branch tips could indicate a serious problem that should be investigated further.
