Political Discussion: 3 Week Countdown to Election Day 2012

Home in Henderson will have a weekly thread for political issues, including this thread, counting down the 8 weeks until November 6th, 2012, election day.  Discuss as you please, keep it civil and respectful.  Next Tuesday will be 3 Week Countdown and so forth. (I hope I got the week count right.)

You are free to comment on political issues anywhere else on the site as well, but it might be easier to carry about long discussions in specified threads instead of many different threads over the website.

The debate this week was a tie, in my opinion. Candy Crowley was a poor choice-especially butting in about Libya. The 2 candidates really don’t like each other. It was not easy to watch the body language and posturing.

I do not like early voting–but it appears most people do. Does this seem like the longest ever campaign to anyone else?

Prudence: Why do you not like early voting? In Ohio the republican attorney general tried to out-law early voting in order to diminish the Black vote. Is that your intention?

I would vote early if it would stop the political phone calls and advertising.

Publius: No, I do have concerns where ballots are kept to protect any tampering–call me cautious is all.

Did anyone notice that Twitt divulged some details of his tax plan Tuesday night? It’s a territorial tax system and only applies to corporations. Basically it calls for a corporate tax rate of zero on profits made outside the U.S. How could his possibly help in producing jobs in America? Why would a corporation not ship all its operations to someplace like Ireland or Greece where taxes are practically nonexistent? Sounds like Koch cooking to me.

Yesterday I voted early and really enjoyed the process. I had the opportunity to talk to several Obama supporters and we had a friendly dialogue. In reply to my question, “Why are you voting for Obama?”, I got some interesting answers which I will share with you.

    1. Because President Roosevelt freed the slaves and did so much for my grandparents.

    2. Because Romney picked that Bush guy from Florida to be his vice presdent and we don’t need no more Bushes up there.

    3. Because Romney be for abortion and I ain’t voting for nobody who thinks like that.

    4. Because Jesse Helms said to vote for Romney.

    5. Because my preacher said that God is for Obama.

Needless to say, I did not attempt to change any minds. I can tell that Reverend Brand and the party have done such a good job of educating the electorate.

” Educating ” is not a good word for intimidating and fear mongering among other things..Nor do I think Rev. Brand used those tactics. In my opinion he used double speak when he was posting.

By the way, where is Mr. Brand? Perhaps he is up in New Hampshire where Obama is spending lots of time.

Royal Rooter–how about that Al Smith dinner–loved it.

Today I voted to let the rev/pastor/deacon/preacher be allowed to Volunteer to Coach at any school of his choosing. Like I said earlier, if he indeed is really wanting to help the youth of the community he can go to the local Henderson/Vance Recreation Dept. and surely his services will be much appreciated…..The only issue may be that this type of ‘helping our youth’ doesn’t come with the fame/notoriety that comes with helping within a School setting.

I keep seeing signs that say Vote for Judge Bridges and I keep reading ads in the Daily Dispatch that say he is among the bottom 3rd in ranking amongst Judges. The ads are being run by his challenger Amanda Stevenson. If I’m not mistaken she is the daughter in-law of the owner of Chex Truck World in Vance County. I will make my 1st prediction on any election and say that Judge Bridges wins by a 75% to 25% margin or in laymen’s terms…..for every 1 Vote Amanda Stevenson gets, Bridges will get 3. Did you see the picture that was in the Daily Dispatch the other day with the early voting? There wasn’t much diversity within the voters according to the picture……

Word has reached the Publius household that George McGovern, former South Dakota senator and Democratic presidential nominee in 1972, and titan of American politics, has died. To his ultimate horror and regret, Publius voted for the demented sociopath Richard Milhouse Nixon. Never voted for a Republican since then.
McGovern piloted liberator bombers over German. His early opposition to the Southeast Asian War gained him many advocates in America. Now recognized as prematurely moral, he remains an exemplar of modern liberalism (probably not a popular position these days). Still, respect should be paid.

  13. I’ll give McGovern some respect for his public stsement of his vehement disagreement against Union Card Check.
Unusual for McGovern. I was pleasently surprised..
    RIP.
