One of the states that figured prominently in the recent presidential election — Iowa — became the 29th state to join the Union on this date in 1846. The name “Iowa” is derived from an American Indian word meaning “the beautiful land,” and it’s thought that the nickname “the Hawkeye State” is in honor of the famous Indian chief, Black Hawk. Iowa has long been an agricultural powerhouse and is the nation’s leading producer of corn and soybeans, as well as hogs and eggs. When Iowa became a state, it had a population of less than 200,000. Today, it is home to just over 3 million people. You can find more facts about America’s people, places and economy from the American Community Survey at <www.census.gov>.

Got my county tax listing statement a bit early this year. I would really LOVE to know why, if I mail it, it goes to Mount Airy. We do not have postal service here? We do not have the ability to open and enter the information like it was done since Vance County was formed? We pay for an office with a “person”, and I say that because every time I go in the tax office to look up something the blinds and door are shut tight in the office Sam used. I really think it is just a computer in there, not a real live person. Maybe it’s like the computer in the movie 2000, Hal.
I sure miss Mr. Brand posting the liberal doctrine. Would love to know his thoughts on our President not passing a budget since he has been in office. And does he, like our President, really believe that if the rich folks just paid a little more of their “fair share” it would solve our countries financial problems? Inconveniant fact alert: When you take entitlement payments like social security and add it to the debt we owe, payments which are automatically deducted, there is no money left over from what is taken in for discretionary spending, like for the military or roads, which is why we keep borrowing. If you took every penny of every millionaires money it would not begin to close the gap. Do any of us in our daily lives or businesses live the way the Congress is running our country? Where is the public outrage except from the Tea Party? This fiscal cliff talk is a bunch of baloney, they – the media and both parties in Congress – are not telling the truth to the American public.
I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of politics and economics but I do know that I’m ‘entitled’ to my SS because I paid into it my entire working life, since age 15. Even after I retired, I paid into SS and Medicare while earning a part-time income. Now, fully retired, Medicare payments are automatically deducted from my SS check. I do not believe I’m getting anything I’ve not invested in. If there’s any outrage to express, it should be at ourselves for not voting for true representatives of the people.
Notice that the congress and the president do not do unto themselves as they do unto us as far as their insurance rates, etc. Now there’s the real problem–they feel above those they are supposedly representing.
I must agree with your observation, prudence. Why should they be granted what we are not? Where are their special entitlements granted? Do our taxes not make them economically secure? Wasn’t that once called a Serfdom?
