Oxford Preparatory High School Application Deadline April 8th

Oxford Preparatory High School’s initial enrollment period will end on April 8th. Enrollment for the first charter high school in the area is open to any student (tuition-free) who 1) is a resident of North Carolina, regardless of county of residence, and 2) will enter 9th grade during the 2013 – 2014 school year. Families of rising 9th grade students can complete the application, available on the school’s website (www.oxfordprephs.org) or at the public libraries in Henderson and Oxford, and mail the form in by the April 8th deadline.

Since naming Andrew Swanner as Executive Director, the school has begun hiring certified, diverse, and talented teachers and staff for the upcoming school year. So far, the faculty includes a social studies teacher who has taught in an International Baccalaureate program in China, a science teacher with a background in teaching Cambridge Curriculum in Arizona, and a former Teach for America teacher who previously taught English in Arkansas and is also certified to teach drama. More information about these teachers, and all remaining available positions, is also available on the school’s website.

In addition to offering a college prep curriculum balanced with community service and robust arts electives, OPHS plans to field various sports teams based on availability of facilities and student demand.

The school is in the process of acquiring a scenic site just outside the city limits of Oxford, on Landis Rd., near the Salem Rd. intersection. Currently, this is an undeveloped site that allows generous room for growth and provides convenient access to families in Oxford, Henderson, and beyond. Site development is expected to begin in May, and the temporary modular campus will be installed by July 1st. The school will operate out of the modular campus for the first two years and then plans to open the 2015 – 2016 school year in a permanent facility on the same site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a charter school?
A: A charter school provides parents with a choice in the education of their children. The schools have open enrollment with no discrimination, no religious association, and no tuition.

Q: How much would it cost to attend OPHS?
A: Charter schools are tuition free. Public tax dollars are the primary funding sources for charter schools. Local, state, and federal dollars follow the child to a charter school.

Q: How is OPHS different than other schools in the area?
A: OPHS is not only centered on a college preparatory curriculum but has a unique focus on the arts and community service in order to develop well-rounded students.

Q: Do you have to live in Oxford or Granville County to attend OPHS?
A: No. As a NC charter school, Oxford Preparatory would be open to any student who is domiciled in North Carolina. If there are more applicants than spaces, a blind public lottery will be held.

Q: Will OPHS offer athletic programs for its students?
A: Yes; at first, only a few JV sports would be offered (i.e. men’s/women’s soccer), but additional programs will be added with demand and availability of facilities.

Q: How can I receive information about employment?
A: All positions, descriptions, and application procedures are posted on the school’s website www.oxfordprephs.org.
