Students present Quilt to VGCC President

quilt-group-williamsStudents in Quilting classes at Vance-Granville Community College recently surprised the president of the college with a unique gift. On May 29, students and their instructor, Peggy Stocks, presented an original quilt (complete with matching pillowcases), called “Very Good Color Combination,” to VGCC President Stelfanie Williams. Individual squares were quilted by various students and then assembled by Stocks. The instructor said the class wanted to make the quilt especially for Dr. Williams in commemoration of both her first year as president and the 50th anniversary of the North Carolina Community College System. A visibly moved Williams thanked the quilters for the special gift, which she said symbolized excellent instruction and the talented students from all walks of life who make Vance-Granville “truly a community college.” Pictured above, standing from left, are student Ruth Hicks of Oxford, instructor Peggy Stocks of Manson, President Williams, students Brenda Parker of Creedmoor, Dawn Lemons of Oxford, Lynn Patiky of Oxford, and, kneeling in front, Leo Kelly of Henderson (who is also a retired VGCC Dean of Adult Basic Education).

VGCC’s Personal Enrichment department offers Quilting classes during both the day and the evening at various times throughout the year. For more information and to register for upcoming Quilting classes, contact Theresa Somerville at (252) 738-3427 or SomervilleT@vgcc.edu.
