Few of us have the opportunity to actually change the shape of people’s lives and help them to live more happily. Such a man was Dr. Claire Straith of Southfield, Michigan, whose birthday in 1891 is noted today. Treating soldiers wounded in World War I, he pioneered many techniques in plastic and cosmetic surgery that are still in use today. Later, noting that he was performing a lot of reconstructive surgery on crash victims, Straith successfully urged automakers to use safety glass and remove dangerous projections from the interiors of their cars. There are some 7,300 plastic surgeons among the 972,000 medical doctors in the U.S. today. Anyone out there thinking about the possible actions being contemplated by US against Syria?
In this case, perhaps the “Mother Country” is correct–NO!
I do not want to have another 9-11–which could very well happen in my opinion.
Obama needs to tone down his arrogance toward former longtime allies of the US. There are some protesters around the White House, but the news hasn’t shown them. As for John Kerry–well–remember his past.
I see schools have reopened because all the parking space anywhere with near the stores next to Vance Charter are in use by the staff and parents. Guess I need to do my shopping someplace else for the next 9 months. There is no reason to think anyone at Vance Charter cares. The leading example of not caring drives a big red truck parked diagonally across two parking spaces. Anyone who parks like that is saying I only care about me and my things. The actions of such a person speaks far louder than their words. Great example for elementary school children.
Prudence and left field how many times did you need to attempt to logon before you could logon? Phil I think the HiH login is still messed up.
Left field your observation is correct. I thought it was just me. I wait until the school is closed before going to the store or card shop. It is a hassle to park there when school is in session and forget even going there when the school is letting out.
The issue right now is a conflict with some page caching we’re doing. When you log in using the right sidebar, it refreshes the page, except it shows you the same page you just saw. You are logged in, but the page shows the login box still. If you click to go to a new page the new page will load and you should see that you’re logged in. This is obviously confusing and on the list of things to address. But the caching helps tremendously with the page loads so we’re leaving it on for now. Thanks all.
Sunday started the last week of the contest seeking ideas that if followed would lead the county to a new and better time. I had hoped that more than one person would submit ideas. So far only Arnold Booth, a candidate for City Council, has offered any ideas. (http://www.hendersondispatch.com/opinion/x1576246895/Letter-Vance-County-fix-parents)
I have personally asked five current City Council members and two County Commissioners if they intended to offer their one idea. All gave me a political answer; so far none have delivered their single idea to the paper for publication on the editorial page. Only Mr. Booth has offered an idea.
Contest rules were published in the Henderson Daily Dispatch three weekends ago. (http://www.hendersondispatch.com/opinion/x2042198403/Letter-Contest-challenge-issued) Mr. Wooten, Editor of the Dispatch, said he would print every idea submitted to the as a letter to the editor. I agreed to use the paper as the base for the contest instead of HiH because I thought using the traditional platform for eliciting public opinion would encourage the general public to man up and submit their single idea. So far with one exception that has not happened. Is it apathy? Is it a lack of readership of the paper’s editorial page? Is it fear of retribution by the de facto powers who’s vision has contributed to the past half century decline of the county?
I know people have ideas. I have heard some ideas some good ideas and some ideas that are offensive even to me. Please submit your idea to the paper’s editorial page so they can be printed this weekend.
“Is it apathy? Is it a lack of readership of the paper’s editorial page? Is it fear of retribution by the de facto powers who’s vision has contributed to the past half century decline of the county?”
Michael, maybe it is none of those things but the fuzzy premise, rules and judging of your project/contest/challenge or what ever it is and the superior attitude which always permeates your writing. Here’s a challenge for you – identify the mystery “de facto powers” by name that everyone can lay all of the blame for the problems our county faces today. I am positive that the liberal policies that have created a dependant society would never cross your mind as being the source of American society and Vance County problems. Instead, you believe it is a secret cult running around knocking heads that is responsable, not laws and policies that break down the family and create government dependence instead of self reliance. Probably a bunch of evil business people involved in that “de facto power” club, right Michael?
I shop at Food Lion frequently as school is letting out at Vance Charter. So there may be a few more cars at the traffic light but children are at school. There is nothing more important in our society than children getting educated, so a little inconveniance is not a big deal in the big picture. Out in Left Field really doesn’t like charter schools and wants to say it keeps folks from shopping in the center. The school is part of the Dabney Drive community and those parents buy cards at Dots and school supplies at Roses and groceries at Food Lion. “There is no reason to think anyone at Vance Charter cares.” Really, you believe that? That school is a good thing in Henderson and most people agree and don’t grumble and whine when children are learning. Get twisted over something really important, don’t resent students, parents and educators at a charter school.
Dagny,
You have the kernel of an idea that is worthy of submission to the contest. As I interpreted your idea you believe that liberal policies have created a dependant society especially in Vance County. Take your idea and suggest the change you would make that will make Vance County a better place and please submit your idea to the paper’s editorial page for publication. The intent of the contest is to collect ideas from the people that they believe will make the county a better place.
I am not judging ideas only trying to get as many as possible published. So Dagny, write your idea and submit it to the paper for publication.
Michael Bobbitt
Michael, When you throw around comments like “fear of retribution by the de facto powers who’s vision has contributed to the decline of the County….” it destroys any credibilityabout the mission of your “contest”. Man up and stand behind your comment and explain who you mean by “de facto powers”. Is it elected officials or business leaders or the police if folks have “fear of retribution”- who do you mean? It is easy to throw around false statements when there is no requirement to back up those allegations with facts. There are daily examples of this lack of integrity, along with poisonous negative attitudes, in Henderson, and that is one huge problem here. The producers are villified and responsible for all the problems, according to these geniuses who have no solutions. And Michael will never elaborate further on his snarky comment and will ignore being challenged about it and then wonder why nobody responded.
Dagny,
You make a good point. So let me restate my earlier comment.
“Is it apathy? Is it a lack of readership of the paper’s editorial page? Is it fear or retribution? What is preventing you from submitting your one idea to make Vance County a better place to the Daily Dispatches editorial page?”
I think that is better. Dagny, thanks for the editorial suggestion.
Michael, May I suggest to post here the submission instructions, the mailing address, etc.
When submitting your one idea to make Vance County a better place for publication in the Daily Dispatch use the link below or the US mail, or hand deliver it to the paper.

Dear Dagny,
Re-read my posting (#2). I did not say I was opposed to Vance Charter. I said I was opposed to the staff and parents usage of all the parking spaces near Dot’s, Radio Shack, Prime Laundry and Food Lion. I am especially opposed to the arrogant one who owns the red truck and uses two parking spaces all day long. If I had a child of grade school age Vance Charter is a better choice than Vance public schools. So Prudence I favor Vance Charter I do not favor the special parking privileges taken by not given to the staff and parents of Vance Charter.
OK, Left Field, go shop somewhere else over a red truck, geez! It will leave a space open for me when I go in Dot’s and Roses. Support our local merchants, these folks live, work and pay taxes and depend on support from the local community. I love the choice of stores, small and large, on the Dabney Drive corrridor. And the school only adds to the nice community mix.
Dagny thank you for making my point even clearer. If those local merchants had any say about the parking spaces near their businesses those spaces would not be filled for seven hours a day with the cars of the staff and parents of the Vance Charter School. The fact the property owner has not fixed the parking issue tells potential customers of the local merchants go somewhere else to shop when school is in session. As for the red truck, the driver is either ignorant of how to park a car or is totally self centered.
If Charter really wants to be a good neighbor–they should abide but what I heard was an agreement that the staff wouldn’t park close to the stores, In my opinion–exercise would be a good idea–plus make it easier for shoppers of all ages to have easier access to stores.
As for the red truck–arrogance for sure in my opinion.
