For those who want to learn how state’s public schools performed in the last school year, the North Carolina School Report Cards offer a one-stop information source that puts a comprehensive collection of data right at your fingertips. The 2012-13 Report Cards, now available at www.ncreportcards.org, feature state-, district- and school-level information about student performance and attendance, class size, school safety, teacher quality and classroom technology.
“With the transition to a new statewide Standard Course of Study, new assessments and a new school accountability model, the 2012-13 school year was the beginning of a new chapter in public education in North Carolina,” said State Superintendent June Atkinson. “I encourage every parent, business leader and community member to use this online tool to learn more about our public schools so we can help all students graduate prepared for college, a career and citizenship.”
The 2012-13 school year was the first year the NC Department of Public Instruction reported results using North Carolina’s new READY accountability model, which does not include school designations such as “School of Excellence,” that have been noted on schools’ Report Cards in previous years. The READY model does reflect academic growth rates and the percentage of students who scored proficient on state assessments so both of these categories of information continue to be available on the Report Cards.
The Report Cards also continue to feature high school graduation rates and Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs). These AMOs are calculated and reported under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act instead of the “all or nothing” measure of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) required under No Child Left Behind. AMOs identify specific proficiency targets for each student subgroup as opposed to one proficiency target that all subgroups must meet.
School officials will be distributing local Snapshots, summary versions of the Report Cards, to parents across the state beginning today. The Snapshots also will be available on the NC School Report Cards website. Parents and others are encouraged to contact teachers for information about grade level and course curriculum while questions about school and district performance should be directed to principals and local superintendents.
The North Carolina School Report Cards have been produced annually since 2001 to provide the public with information about local schools, districts and overall state data. The Report Cards site is searchable by school or school system name, by using a North Carolina map, or by selecting desired school characteristics.
