One of the most frightening industrial accidents in the U.S. occurred on this date in 1979 at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant on the Susquehanna River, south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A cascade of alarms and emergency responses started when someone mistakenly cross connected air and water lines in the plant’s number two reactor. The plant reportedly came close to a hydrogen gas explosion and a meltdown of its uranium core, which would have caused extensive radiation contamination. The incident sparked a large-scale review of nuclear power safety. Today, there are 65 such plants operating 104 nuclear reactors in 31 states across the country, and employing about 38,000 workers. I asked the librarian if the sheriff was digging around in the treeless park next to the library for the missing bank bag. The librarian said no the park is the future home of Sam Watkins’ theater. She added the construction of the theater is why I had to park across the street on the steeply sloped parking lot. I asked why we couldn’t use the level parking lot next to the library. She said Art Pope demanded the best parking spaces for his employees at Variety. I asked if Art Pope also got permission for his employees to use all the parking spaces along Garnet, Wyche and Breckenridge Streets around his business. The librarian said she didn’t know and that she also had to park further from the library. Since Art Pope’s employees got all the prime parking spaces at the library but don’t use half of them could the new police chief start handing out tickets to all the cars parked for more than two hours around his business? Art Pope you may run the State you don’t live here and we want our library parking lot back.
Tis nice that the parking spaces are taken up by people who are employed in Henderson. Pope has created employment opportunities here .
Elmwood are you so subtly saying those of us who pay Vance County property taxes are not as important as Art Pope’s minions? This is the center of the issue: Art Pope demanded the best parking spaces at the library for his employees yet he does not demand that those same employees use those prize spaces. Instead nearly a third of the spaces are unused during the workday hours. Take note a significant number of Art Pope’s minions and the bulk of his upper management live outside of Vance County and do not contribute the cost and maintenance of those prize parking spaces. Another burden the Vance County taxpayers must bear.
