LOUISBURG, N.C.—The evening of Thursday, May 1, 2014, Louisburg College will present two cultural events open to the public: for those interested in history, the Tar River Center for History and Culture will offer the final installment of its 2013-14 Civil War lecture series; and for the theatrically inclined, The Norris Theatre will showcase the final performance of its spring musical, Godspell.
Civil War Lecture, 7:30pm (Benson Chapel)
Michael R. Hill, research supervisor of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, will present a lecture entitled “Full of Blue Coats: Sherman’s Army in Franklin County.” This is the final presentation of the Tar River Center for History and Culture’s 2013-2014 lecture series, “The Civil War and Its Aftermath in North Carolina and Franklin County.”
Hill, who earned a master’s degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is co-author of Sherman’s March through North Carolina: A Chronology, published in 1994 by the Division of Archives and History. Early in his career, he also produced a thorough report on the history of Louisburg’s Person Place.
Prior to the lecture, at 7pm college officials will officially dedicate a national Civil War Trails marker located on the brick walkway that runs between Main Building and Main Street. The marker commemorates the encampment of many of Sherman’s troops on the campuses of Louisburg Female College and the Franklin Academy in May of 1865.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Maury York, director of the Tar River Center for History and Culture, at (919) 497-3252 or at myork@louisburg.edu.
Godspell, 7:30pm (The Norris Theatre)
The final performance of the inspirational and international hit musical Godspell will be offered May 1 at the intimate Norris Theatre, part of the JPAC at Louisburg College.
Based on the Gospel of Matthew, and featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz (composer of Broadway hits Wicked and Pippin), Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs led by the international hit, “Day By Day.” This production of one of the biggest off-Broadway successes of all time stars Louisburg College students, faculty and staff, and features exceptional area students as well.
Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and children; they are available through the Louisburg College Box Office by calling (919) 497-3300.
Godspell is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI in New York, New York (212-541-4684 / www.MTIShows.com).
