Dessert contest planned for Strawberry Day at State Farmers Market May 1

RALEIGH — Strawberry lovers are encouraged to take part in the Strawberry Dessert Contest at the State Farmers Market on Thursday, May 1. The contest is one of the many activities planned for the 2014 Strawberry Day at the market.

Dishes will be judged on flavor, appearance, quality and creative use of strawberries. Recipes should include at least two cups of N.C. strawberries, and strawberries must be a main ingredient. All entries must be in disposable containers and include the complete recipe with cooking instructions, along with contestant’s name, address and telephone number. Prize money will be awarded for the top three desserts: $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third.

Desserts can be dropped off between 8 and 10 a.m. at the State Farmers Market Administrative Office at 1201 Agriculture St. Judging will start at 10 a.m. Media are invited to attend the judging. Prizes will be awarded at noon at the Event Center, located between the Farmers Building and N.C. Seafood Restaurant.

Strawberry Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with free samples of strawberry ice cream for all guests. Visitors also can have their photo taken with Suzy the Strawberry and pick up free strawberry recipes to take home. In addition, market vendors will have a variety of locally grown strawberries and strawberry products for purchase.

North Carolina is the fourth-largest producer of strawberries in the nation. The state’s strawberry season runs through June. Strawberry growers are expecting an outstanding crop despite challenging winter weather earlier this year.
