Mental Health First Aid June 26th and 27th
Mental Health First Aid is the initial help given to a person showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental health crisis (severe depression, psychosis, panic attack, suicidal thoughts and behaviors) until appropriate professional or other help, including peer and family support, can be engaged. Download flyer here: NAMI MHFA Henderson Flyer The stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents people from seeking help or even acknowledging that they need help. And if they do want help, they don’t know …
White House: “They Gave Their Lives So That We Might Live Ours”
Monday, President Obama traveled to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and deliver remarks at a memorial service honoring our fallen servicemembers and their families. The President, who returned from Afghanistan this morning, thanked troops and veterans for their service to our nation, and paid tribute to the fallen: Today, in small towns across America, in cemeteries throughout our country and around the world, and here on these solemn hillsides, the families …

On this date one century ago, what was perhaps history’s most consequential assassination took place to surprisingly little notice at the time. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, was killed along with his wife by a Serbian nationalist. After a month of bluster and failed diplomacy, by early August 1914, most of Europe was at war, one that the United States joined in 1917. When the smoke cleared in 1918, and the Ottoman, Russian, Austria-Hungarian and German empires …

The difficulty of neatly painting cars two different colors led to the patenting of one of the world’s most practical items — at least around gift-giving time — on this date in 1930. Five years earlier, Richard Drew, while working for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company, had developed an easy-to-peel, glue-backed masking tape to ease the task of separating two-tone paint jobs on new cars, which until then involved moistened plaster tape. Then, he expanded its use by introducing …
Memorial Day Message from Senator Burr
As we celebrate Memorial Day, let us take a moment to remember the true meaning of the holiday: to honor those service members who have sacrificed for our nation. Upon entry to the United States military, these brave men and women take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, our country, and our freedom, even if it means paying the ultimate price. For those who pay this price, we express our deepest gratitude. Let us also remember the families …
Richard Brand: Limited the power of city and county government
Some of us have this vision of a “well-rounded” community. There are parks, there are libraries, there are schools, there are recreation areas, there are places for music and the arts, and there are places for businesses and manufacturing. It appears that the Republican legislators in North Carolina have eyes for only business. They have no interest in good schools and education. They have no interest in repairing crumbling bridges and roads, harbors, museums. They have no interest in helping …
Shad in the Classroom Project at SVHS
Students in science classes at Southern Vance High School again this spring participated in the “Shad in the Classroom” project, a unique program led by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. The program provided training, tanks and eggs to 23 schools along the Neuse and Roanoke River Basins in mid-April. At Southern Vance, students helped raise the eggs to young fish and used their observations and experiences to learn concepts related to the shad’s survival, the species’ cultural and biological …
Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
Tomorrow is Memorial Day when we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I celebrated our military heroes this week at the 17th Annual Women in the Military Wreath Laying Ceremony taking place in Arlington National Cemetery. Please join me in taking time tomorrow to remember those who gave their life to serve in America’s Armed Forces. It is equally important that we honor and care for the veterans who returned home after serving our country. As …

Attorney General Roy Cooper Alert: Phony Card Cancellation Notices Arrive Via Phone
Consumers in North Carolina are receiving automated telephone calls saying that their credit or debit card has been canceled or deactivated. The message offers recipients a way to get their card back into service. The calls are coming from a variety of numbers. Sometimes Caller ID displays only a partial number, or a number with no area code. The company or financial institution that issued the card is not named in the message. Some recipient are instructed to “Press 1” …
Legislative Update from Senator Richard Burr
Last week, I continued to work along with some of my colleagues on addressing the serious problems facing the VA and the Veterans Health Administration. On Tuesday, Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and I introduced S. 2362, legislation that would prohibit the payment of bonuses to employees at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) through Fiscal Year 2015. It is appalling and totally unacceptable that the VHA, which is being scrutinized by Congress and the media for a string of national scandals, …

This week, the President spoke on the importance of raising the minimum wage, …

President Bill Clinton announced the formal normalization of diplomatic relations with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on July 12, 1995, just over 20 years since the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, the then-capital of South Vietnam. The contentious intervention to preserve South Vietnam from communist takeover cost 58,000 America …
