Vance-Granville Community College hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive on its Main Campus in Vance County on May 28. While the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program frequently co-sponsors such blood drives, this one was unique because the coordinator was a current student, Tessa Egan of Louisburg.
“The blood drive went well,” Egan reported. “We had many appointments scheduled and several walk-ins, which was encouraging to see!” She said that a total of 24 units of blood was donated by fellow students, VGCC faculty and staff, and other members of the community. “Every donation was appreciated and will make a huge difference in the lives of the recipients,” Egan said. “It was a wonderful learning experience for me to work alongside the Red Cross to coordinate this blood drive.”
As coordinator, Egan’s tasks included scheduling donors, advertising the drive, preparing a location for the drive as well as an area to register donors. By serving as the coordinator, Egan became eligible for a scholarship opportunity through the American Red Cross. “It was very rewarding knowing that my time was spent being a part of saving lives,” she said.
Egan is scheduled to graduate from the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program in May 2015 and plans to continue her education by earning a bachelor’s degree.
