Would you like to get your musical instrument out of the closet, and play it again? Have you longed for your high school days when you loved to play your instrument and wished you could do so again? The Vance-Granville Community Band, under the direction of VGCC music instructor Ivory Brock, is looking for people who would like to do just that.

Since it was first formed in 2008, the all-volunteer community band has included VGCC students, local high school students, educators, and interested citizens from all four counties of the college’s service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin) and beyond.

No auditions are required. “Many people who have started to play their instruments again were surprised to realize their tone and technique coming back quickly after a short time and wondered why they hadn’t come back to play sooner,” said Carl Cantaluppi of Butner, who has played clarinet in the band for many years.

“Age knows no limit when it comes to playing your instrument again,” Cantaluppi added. “If you have the desire and willingness, you will succeed. Our purpose is to make music, make new friends, and have fun.”

Anyone interested in joining the ensemble should contact Carl Cantaluppi at carl1954@hotmail.com or (919) 691-5455, and he can start to set up a music folder for you.

The band’s first rehearsal of the new academic year will be Monday, August 25, 2014, at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center (Interstate 85, Exit 209, Poplar Creek Road) in Henderson. Rehearsals are generally held there from 7-9 p.m. on Monday nights.
