Even in this Internet world, many of us still receive printed catalogs through the mail, especially near the holiday season. The first such catalog — more of a flyer — was sent out by Montgomery Ward late this month in 1872. That first catalog consisted of only one page, featuring 163 items for mail order purchase. The idea was so successful that by 1904, the Ward’s catalog weighed in at four pounds. Montgomery Ward ceased producing its catalog in 1985, and the company itself eventually failed in the largest retail bankruptcy liquidation in American history. But the home shopping business is still thriving. There are about 24,000 electronic shopping and mail order houses, and each year they sell over $220 billion worth of goods. Profile America is in its 17th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

I’m so tired of irresponsible parents allowing their children to drink alcohol and their children’s friends to come drink with them at their house. In the news today, a prominent neurologist in Raleigh and his wife have now been arrested, along with their 18 year old son, for providing alcohol to minors at a house party and one of the teens driving home drunk and crashing and dieing. I certainly hope true justice happens in this instance so that parents will stop and think before letting children drink alcohol that aren’t their own children, in the least!! The other interesting part of that story is that the 18 year old son went into a State Run ABC store and bought Jack Daniels. So, that employee will surely lose his/her job, the state will be liable for a lawsuit for wrongful death of a child(yes, that is paid with tax dollars), and more tax money will be spent punishing the parents of this 18 year old for ALLOWING him to drink and his friends to drink at their house WITH THEM. Doesn’t common sense ever kick in??? If it’s illegal to allow your OWN children to drink alcohol, why would a parent make the dumb decision to allow OTHER PEOPLE’S children to drink??? The answer is very simple: They aren’t parents. They care more for being cool with their kids than they do of raising their kids with structure and discipline and rules. What a sad world we find ourselves in. Grow up parents of America. Time to be parents and not friends.
Today is National Left-handers Day.
Since the left half of the brain controls the right side of the body; we, the left-hand dominate, are the only ones using the right side of the brain.
Three of the last four presidents are left-hand dominate.
With legalized Marijuana on the way maybe we should look at alcohol rules If you are old enough to die for your country and old enough to vote why not let some types of alcohol be legal ?
News reports this morning said the President is sending 130 “advisors” to Iraq to assess the situation–where have I heard that phrase before? Oh yes, when “advisors” were sent to Viet Nam-” When Will They Ever Learn–When Will They Ever Learn?”
elmwood, I agree with you. I think the drinking age should be 18. But that still does not excuse parents from allowing other people’s children from drinking. Totally ridiculous and inexcusable.
