Healthcare training courses scheduled at VGCC Warren Campus

Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled several occupational healthcare courses to start in September at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton.

The Nurse Aide Refresher course is scheduled to be held Monday-Thursday, Sept. 2 through Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Melissa Hawkins will serve as the instructor. This 40-hour program is designed for a Nurse Aide (CNA) Level I whose certification has expired. To take this course, students must have been on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry, or provide proof of satisfactory completion of a NA I program approved by the state of North Carolina. The cost of this course is $129 plus a $4 campus security fee.

The Geriatric Aide program will be offered for the first time by VGCC, Monday-Thursday, Sept. 8 through Oct. 20, each evening from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Linda Hahnel is scheduled to teach this 100-hour course. Geriatric Aide is a new opportunity for local Nurse Aides (already listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry) to gain advanced training in helping older adults. The course is focused on geriatric care with an emphasis on person-centered care concepts, hydration, nutrition, mental health, dementia, behavioral challenges, pain management, palliative care and stress management. The cost of this course is $200 plus applicable fees.

The Nurse Aide Level I course will also be offered on Warren Campus on both day and evening schedules. The daytime class, with instructor Melissa Hawkins, will meet Monday-Thursday, Sept. 15 through Nov. 13, from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Michelle Bugg will teach the evening class, scheduled to meet Monday-Thursday, Sept. 17 through Dec. 19, from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. This 210-hour program prepares students for employment in a variety of health care settings, including nursing homes, assisted living homes, home care, hospitals and doctor’s offices. Nursing assistants provide basic patient care and assist the nursing staff with routine daily tasks. Classroom, laboratory and clinical learning experiences are included. For either class, the cost is $205 plus applicable fees.
