VGCC to offer free High School Equivalency practice tests for limited time

Vance-Granville Community College will provide High School Equivalency practice tests at no cost to any local adult on weekdays between Sept. 22 and Oct. 3, 2014, as part of the national GED Testing Service’s “See for Free” program.

Students may take the “GED Ready” practice tests at either VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County; the Franklin County Campus near Louisburg; South Campus, between Butner and Creedmoor; or the Warren County Campus in Warrenton.

“If you’ve thought about completing your high school diploma, this is a unique opportunity to see for free how well-prepared you are to pass the tests, and find out the skills you need to work on,” said Cathy Barham, VGCC’s Adult Basic Skills department chair. “This opportunity is available not only to students who have already started studying through our program, but also to anyone in the community who has no prior experience with us.”

After taking the practice test, students will receive a personalized study plan highlighting the exact pages and chapters to study in commonly-used study books.

To complete the HSE program (formerly known as GED®), a student must pass a battery of four tests, in the subject areas of Reasoning through Language Arts; Mathematical Reasoning; Science; and Social Studies. Ordinarily, practice tests are offered for $6 per subject area ($24 total). VGCC does not require any student to take a practice test before taking the actual tests. According to the GED Testing Service, 95% of students who score “Likely to Pass” on the official practice test go on to pass that test subject of the real test. The service offers a guarantee that if students do not pass that subject, they will pay students’ fees to retake that subject.
