Original Story: On September 17, 2014 around 5:56 PM members of the Henderson Police Department received a report of someone being shot near the intersection of Clark Street and East Andrews Ave, Henderson. Victim was taken to an area hospital by a personal vehicle. Upon further investigation it was determined that the victim, Kenyetta Hawkins, 13, of Henderson, was inside a vehicle parked in the parking lot of “The Spot” when she was struck in the hand by gunfire. Victim was not involved in the shooting and her injury does not appear to be life threatening. Incident is under further investigation by members of the Henderson Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
Unfortunately Henderson has a thug infestation problem, wish we could just call Orkin and get rid of them all.
This “suspect” like several others in the recent past, live at 239 Gary st, which is rental property. Rental property is one of the reasons for all this crime in my opinion.
All Henderson has left is rental property, lol. If that went away, 80% of the housing would be abandoned.
Does everybody recall the “New Direction” which campaigned as a group to unseat Ms. Yount, Ms. Harper, Mr. Gupton and Mr. Wilkerson. They were backed by “The Boys With Long Arms” and several real estate types. One thing they wanted to eliminate was inspections of rental property. They won and now see the result.
This has nothing to do with inspections of rental property. Whether the rentals are in great shape or poor shape, they would still be full of renters. These renters are renters because they either have ruined their credit by not paying, life threw them a curveball and they lost their homes, are too young to have established credit, choose to be a nothing in life and rent rather than actually go get a job and build themselves up to the point where they can own, or any combination of these. The economy jump started the rental business for sure. But our citizens have done little, as a total society, to rebound from the loss of jobs, etc. Instead of fighting and finding a way, so many threw their hands up and made a decision to live off of the government and settle in life. The landlords celebrate every day, lol. However, I don’t have any negative mindset toward the landlords. They are thriving only because our citizens choose to allow them to do so.
When Yount and Harper wanted to make a new ordinance that would make these “SLUMLORDS” who prey on the poor to at least meet minimum housing standards but the idea was shot down by the “new direction”. Thus you have houses who are constantly being rented for the sole purpose to be used to push drugs and/or prostitution in Vance County. Ask any Law Enforcement Official and I’m sure they will tell you they get a tremendous amount of calls to these “rental units”. My question is how do the SLUMLORDS know who is renting the units when most of them are afraid to even go into these neighborhoods!! The SLUMLORDS are getting a nice fat check from the govt. for the Section 8 Vouchers to allow these houses(I use the term very loosely) to be lived in. I have been in some of these rental units and I wouldn’t allow my dog to live there much less a human being. Holes in walls….holes in windows….no screen doors….no hot water(or no water at all).
All the while the owners of the dilapidated houses are living the good life over in the Country Club!!! You reap what you sow………………………………………………………..There are more ways to “cheat” the tax system other than telling a lie about dependents who live with you. This type of “lie” is considered white collar and is very seldom if ever prosecuted. The majority of the cases that go before District 9 Court System are defendants who are indigent….which means taxpayers pay that bill also!!!
Mr. O, I understand your point of view but don’t agree with your conclusion that people who have to ‘rent’ section 8 are unmotivated to get a job. Have you had to search for a job lately? Or have you looked into non section 8 rentals? Have you ever had to support even one child, paying for everything on your minimum wages? Are you aware that felons (approx. 25% of our national adult population) can’t find jobs in Vance Co. or NC? They can’t find work even after their ‘price’ to society has been paid. What are we going to do to give these people even a glimmer of hope for reconstructing their lives? One former felon I know spent a year in NC trying to find work, finally gave up and went to Nevada, where he found a decent job in two weeks and within 6 years was in management at a grocery chain. He had to return to NC to help care for his ailing father. He has been unable to find even a labor job in over a year. He gets good interviews but once the background check shows up, hope ends. So how is chronic unemployment helping these ex-cons get back on track? No one seems to realize we, as a society, cannot thrive when a quarter of the population cannot find work due to lack of opportunity. Now that prisons are profit making ventures, it’s vital they have a productive, pennies a day workforce. Yet, it costs taxpayers more to keep these people in prison than the average minimum wage income. Something is truly askew here.
Zep, I am very aware of that issue. I agree with you 100% when it comes to most of what you said. I am glad you shared your view on employment difficulties for felons because I am very aware of this terrible struggle. I agree that our system is beyond broken. However, I know that determined people find a way. I am a determined person for sure. Failure is not an option or an excuse for me. But our system definitely makes it very difficult for a felon to get back on his feet and stay there. Of course, most felons don’t want the opportunity to work their way back into success. They want it, as most all young people in today’s society, handed to them immediately. Immediate gratification or it isn’t worth the effort. That’s the motto lately. As for the rentals, I haven’t been in any of these slum homes so I will certainly take you guys’ word on their disrepair. That is bad. I didn’t know they were that bad. I now see where Prudence was coming from.
I, too, understand where Prudence is coming from. I was one of the activists for rental inspections and I read the misinformation distributed in the slum zones, planting seeds of distrust. I’ve been in some of the section 8 rentals. Most were humble but as clean as possible given missing door and window screens, falling down porches, gaps in the flooring, bad plumbing and some tiny houses located on unpaved, rutty roads right in the heart of Henderson. A rental inspection policy could benefit both the tenants and landlords. All one has to do is photographically (with time stamp) document the unit once it is ready by the owners, then document the unit when it is vacated by the latest tenant. Today’s technology makes that easy and inexpensive, so cost should be low. Our sermon at homecoming today was about working together to make things happen for the better and not letting the nay sayers keep us from uniting to improve conditions.
I’ve carefully read my previous post (which is in moderation) to try to understand why it deserves moderation. I’m pretty certain I’ve not been politically incorrect or violated anyone’s Constitutional rights.
All of the excuses in the world still can’t belie the seeming truth that most of those arrested and convicted of crimes here were residing in those same areas
The landlords aren’t providing these rentals out of the goodness in their hearts-it must be profitable in my opinion.
Other parts of the state may have jobs available, yet so many people stay here–and seem to get in trouble–.
I would like to see the statistics on the # of times the actual owners of the dilapidated rental units gets visited by the owners. One owner in particular has been charged in the past with possession of stolen property among other things. It’s public record…..Gregory Stevenson is the owner. Guess it was cheaper to buy a stolen appliance or accessories as opposed to going to Lowe’s and buying them legally! If I’m not mistaken his arrest and charges are still pending in the good ole’ District 9 Court System. Guess it’ll be continued until the new Dist. Atty. takes office and then something may be done(or not).
The owners of these run-down rental units are making $$ hand over fist b/c if they weren’t then it wouldn’t be so many people in the business and trying to get into the business. I guess Uncle Sam’s Section 8 Vouchers doesn’t bounce when you put it into the bank unlike some other tenants. Shame on anyone who makes $$ on the backs of poor, uneducated people of any city….much less Henderson and/or Oxford. At least Oxford has a Housing Authority that oversees the Apts. and if tenants complain of neighbors and/or loitering then the tenant that is allowing this to occur can go ahead and pack their bags b/c they will evict them. Guess they hit 85N and head towards Vance Co. where the ‘laws’ are a little less enforced when it comes to rental agreements.
For once, Deception, we are in accord! Sadly, this nation was made on the backs of poor, uneducated people by those who controlled the purse strings. The only reason we’ve forgotten the shady, greedy deals of our mighty nation builders is because they got so filthly rich they endowed libraries and performance centers; later in life, of course, once they’d crushed the labor force into rebellion.

That statement was made by someone educated in a school system where American history, civics and government were never taught. It reveals zero understanding or appreciation of our Constitution which protects every citizen. There are educators in the County today who also repeat this kind of ugly talk, infecting innocent children with this notion and killing their dreams. I have heard it said unashamedly in almost the same words and these same people wonder about the problems in the schools and society today. Parents, teach love of country at home because kids won’t get it in most schools, just communist indoctrination by educators that don’t even understand that is what they are promoting when they condemn the Founding Fathers. Just like Rick Brand hating on capitalism, he doesn’t understand what the alternative is.
The constitution was not put into place so robber barons could accumulate vast wealth by exerting control over natural resources, acquiring high levels of political influence, paying low wages, busting unions when necessary, and eliminating competition by acquiring competitors in order to create monopolies and eventually raise prices. America is more than a greed machine to feed the insatiable appetites of a few, Miss Taggert. The excesses of these self-chosen few are what spawned your dreaded communism.
“That statement was made by someone educated in a school system where American history, civics and government were never taught. It reveals zero understanding or appreciation of our Constitution which protects every citizen.”
NOT. I wasn’t educated in NC, the long term #47th (sometimes #48) in k-12 education.
Like I said, American history, civics or government isn’t taught any more. The Constitution sure isn’t taught here, students are taught that the Founding Fathers were evil slave owners so you shouldn’t even mention them and there is no way they could have created anything that is good. Students are taught there is nothing special about America or our system of government. They aren’t individuals, just part of some group like black or white or gay or “in poverty”. The government is your Daddy and should rule your life. Break down the American family, make Father’s obsolete, that is pure communism and you guys embrace it and blame the perverted form of crony capitalism that we have today for our countries and towns problems. Ya’ll should dread communism but you can’t even recognize it when you see it.
I’ll have to take you at your word as to what is being taught in schools these days since it’s been a while, but I find it curious that all your objections fall into the libertarian worldview that you so obliviously possess. Here is one thing I remember being taught in seventh grade history-the Ku Klux Klan was a civic organization that primarily fought against Northern influences. May I venture to say that maybe in our schools the curriculum has improved? Yes, your horrible victimhood is noted. Is there anything I can do to soothe your pain?
Dagney, your idea of communism is obviously gleaned from the examples of Marx and Lenin. I grew up during the “Red Scare”, bomb shelters and the McCarthy commie hunters. But if one were curious enough to look up the word Communism, it would be easy enough to understand that the concept was perverted in the same way democracy has been. Jesus was probably the first communist; his followers contributed to the whole and each had their needs met. Needs, not wants. It’s the wants in any political philosophy that eventually ruins the practice. Our country is not headed towards Communism. We already practice Socialism for the poor and corporate entities, not to mention our elected representatives.
A little update on school curricula:

Periodically, I’m inspired by our youth. I ask myself, are we inspiring them?
