What a difference between county and city governments.
Two days after the August Board of Commissioner regular meeting the county manager used the newspaper to announced his intentions to retire in five months. A committee of three commissioners, one is the Board’s chair, held two committee level meetings to approve a former commissioner’s criteria for a county manager. A week following the second committee meeting the committee’s approved criteria was presented to the full board for approval. Although the public was invited to suggest criteria the public understood the fix was in so there was no need to speak.
During a regular City Council meeting the City Manager announced his retirement effective in 45 days. The next day the mayor called for a special city council meeting “to discuss steps to replace the City Manager.” The mayor extended an invitation to the city voters to attend the special meeting.
Although both techniques are allowed one technique is closed and exclusive while the other technique is open and inclusive. I prefer the open inclusive technique over a closed exclusive technique. What is your preference?
Mikey…certainly they aren’t considering bringing D.Wright back in as the County Manager? Why not advertise the position like most counties and get the BEST QUALIFIED candidates and interview them instead of trying to hand select another ‘good ole’ boy’? Any wonder why Vance County continues to be the punchline of many jokes involving the local counties? WOW!!!!!!!!!
I’m not sure if D.W. is the former commissioner they are speaking of but I can’t think of anyone else who has retired from the Board within the past 7-8 years. Some of the current commissioners must have signed on as “lifers”.
SIX YEARS COMMUTING. Had he really wanted to being his family to Henderson, the City Manager could have done so, in my opinion. How much real interest did he have?
Prudence, it had more to do about having a house in Va., and a house for sale in Tennessee. Don’t blame him for not buying another house here, just another one not to sale. And if I’m eyeing retirement, that area of Va. looks pretty good.
Dear Prudence, a person willing to commute to work from another town is pretty dedicated, imho. Judge not lest you be judged.
Prudence,
I think it is obvious that Mr. or Ms. Mingo is more knowledgeable of Mr. Griffin than you and my combine knowledge squared. Prudence do you desire a return to the era of mismanagement, weak governance, and unbalanced spending?
It is of little difference to me if Mr. Griffin commuted between Uranus and Henderson he demonstrated his real interest in Henderson through the logical infrastructure changes and management improvements implemented during his tenure. He reversed decades of the self serving cronyism.
The mayor is continuing those changes by opening the doors of city council for citizens to attend a special city council meeting “to discuss steps to replace the City Manager.” The meeting is at the noon hour today. I do not expect to see the city council members and staff having lunch on the taxpayer’s dime as is the practice of the county commissioners. I do hope you, Prudence, along with Dagny, Mingo, Opinionated, Publius, and Zep will attend today’s meeting.
