“10 – 22 – 38 Astoria.” That cryptic sequence indicating date and place was the very first photocopied image, created on this date in 1938 in Astoria, New York. A man named Chester Carlson developed a method of making dry copies of documents on plain paper, known as xerography — which we take for granted in using photocopiers today. Before his invention, copies were made either by using carbon paper when typing or by a mimeograph machine for large numbers of copies. Both were messy and cumbersome. The first commercial copiers became available in 1959. Now, 76 years to the day after the first photocopy, making copiers is a $2.2 billion a year business in the U.S. Profile America is in its17th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

More sad news for our little hamlet. The owner of the local paper dismissed the leading bright spots of the paper, Mr. Alan Wooten. Rumors abound on the owner’s reasoning the one most often repeated the owner is going in a different direction. What is the new direction? Here are some thoughts you can add yours. 1. Further reduce the number of pages in the paper and increase ad costs. 2. Publish Paxton Group editorials and use Durham based reporters to cover Henderson or Vance County news. 3. Reduce publication to two days a week. What new direction do you think the owner will choose? Good luck Alan.
The Daily Dispatch makes the Oxford Ledger look like the NY Times. I wouldnt even call it a paper…its more like a flier!
BTW….did you see where an accounting firm paid $$ back to a county b/c it hadn’t caught an embezzling scheme? The firm said it was cheaper to pay $$ back instead of the risk involved with going to Court!!! Too bad Vance County doesn’t hold people accountable. The THIEF will not serve 1 day in jail nor pay back any $$$…..watch & see!!!
Anyone know what happened to Alan Wooten? I thought he was one of the better editors they’ve had in the past few years. In a tough spot with the paper being printed all the way in High Point. Can’t get anything in the paper that happens after 5 p.m. That makes sports not even yesterday’s news – it’s the day-BEFORE-yesterday’s news. Might as well go back to afternoon.
Wooten had a recent silly editorial and used the phrase “unconfirmed facts” about an issue near and dear to my heart. He couldn’t help trying to turn the issue into a political one and in so doing, he risked hurting local businesses – which revealed to me that he couldn’t have been truly invested in Henderson. Politics mattered more than this community because he wasn’t from here and probably figured he wouldn’t be staying here. Newspapers have a tough time these days. He was a nice guy personally but editors shouldn’t wear their politics on their sleeve as it turns off advertisers.
What an interesting comment Dagny, The owners of the Dispatch hardly have an interest in Henderson other than the bottom line. The best thing the Dispatch can do now is “take another direction: with the sports page . Let’s see some recognition of local teams on page one of Sports.
