Vance-Granville Community College held a “Celebration of Gospel” on Feb. 12, in honor of Black History Month, and in the spirit of bringing together the college with the communities it serves. The event, organized by the college’s Division of Business and Applied Technologies, was held in the VGCC Civic Center.

The program began with welcoming remarks from the president of VGCC, Dr. Stelfanie Williams. Jeffrey Allen, VGCC’s director of leadership and professional development, and Angela King-Blow, an instructor at the college, served as hosts and offered reflections on African American history between performances by various artists.

Among the participants were the South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church Choir and Henderson-based Community Fellowship Mass Choir, performing together; “God’s Men of Harmony,” a noted a cappella gospel quartet from Granville County; the Liturgical Dance Ministry and “Divine Prerogative” mime ministry from White Rock Missionary Baptist Church of Oxford; the North Carolina Central University Worship and Praise Inspirational Mass Choir; and the Hillsborough-based group, “New Creation.”

Pastor Abidan Shah of Clearview Church in Henderson provided the invocation and the benediction.

VGCC’s celebration of Black History Month continues with a program focused on local history, entitled “Honoring Our Past, Understanding Our Present & Shaping Our Future,” which is set for Thursday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The public is invited to this event, as well.
