Plans set for Spring Litter Sweep and Recycling Day April 25th, 2015

The Henderson-Vance Recycling Day will be held for a third time on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the front parking lot of the City Operations Center on Beckford Drive. Previous Recycling Days were held in April and September last year.

All items are accepted free of charge at the Recycling Day.

The Recycling Day is the culminating event for the annual Henderson-Vance Spring Litter Sweep Week, sponsored again this year by the Vance County Appearance Commission and the Henderson Community Appearance Commission.

Throughout the Spring Litter Sweep Week, April 20-25, organizers are asking local residents, businesses, school groups, churches, youth groups, civic organizations and others to take time to clean up their properties to help improve the appearance of our community. Local Adopt-A-Highway groups also are being asked to go out and clean their designated roadside areas to help improve the appearance of streets and roads throughout Vance County. The N.C. Department of Transportation and work crews from the N.C. Department of Corrections are expected to help clean up along roadsides during the week.

The last two weeks in April are designated as the period for the North Carolina Spring Litter Sweep with citizens throughout the state encouraged to get involved and beautify our environment.

Clean-up supplies of gloves, trash bags, recycling bags and orange safety vests are available for groups during the Spring Litter Sweep Week. They can be picked up beginning Thursday, April 16, at the City Operations Center at 900 South Beckford Drive in Henderson, and at the Vance County Schools’ Administrative Services Center at 1724 Graham Avenue in Henderson.

Tickets also can be distributed to clean-up volunteers when they pick up their supplies, so that they can attend a special hot dog luncheon planned for Litter Sweep Week volunteers beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Freedom Life Church of God at 1001 Martin Creek Road, just off U.S. 1 Bypass, in Henderson. The luncheon again is being hosted by Jason Brown and his “Wisdom for Life” foundation and the “Fruit of the Spirit” community group.

Used pesticides won’t be accepted during Recycling Day, however, a collection for used pesticides will be available on Thursday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market on Beckford Drive in Henderson.

At Recycling Day, Safe Kids of Vance County also will have representatives on hand who are certified to check the safety of child seats for automobiles and other vehicles. Residents who want their child’s safety seat checked are asked to bring both the seat and their child, so that technicians can check the effectiveness of the seat with the child strapped in it.

All Vance County residents are urged to get involved in the Spring Litter Sweep Week and to bring their recyclables to the Recycling Day event.
