The Henderson-Vance Spring Litter Sweep Week will be observed Monday, April 20, through Saturday, April 25, with the week’s activities culminating with a Recycling Day event held on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of the City Operations Center at 900 S. Beckford Drive in Henderson.
Litter Sweep Week and Recycling Day are sponsored by the Vance County Appearance Commission and the Henderson Community Appearance Commission.
All local residents are urged to get out during next week and clean up around their homes, businesses, neighborhoods, subdivisions, schools, churches and along city streets and county roads to improve the appearance of the community. Clean up supplies of gloves, trash and recycling bags and orange safety vests are available for those who may need them at the City Operations Center on Beckford Drive and the Vance County Schools’ Administrative Services Center on Graham Avenue in Henderson. Those who volunteer to clean up areas during Spring Litter Sweep Week are invited to attend a free hot dog lunch in appreciation of their efforts at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Freedom Life Church of God at 1001 Martin Creek Road, just off U.S. 1 Bypass, in Henderson. The luncheon again is being hosted by Jason Brown and his “Wisdom for Life” foundation and the “Fruit of the Spirit” community group.
Litter Sweep Week volunteers who attend the free luncheon can qualify to win cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100. To be eligible for the cash prizes, volunteer groups should take photos of the number of trash bags they fill, the number of people in their group and the most unique item they find during their cleanup. The cash prizes will be given out as $300 for the most trash bags filled, $200 for the most people in a group and $100 for the most unique item found during the Litter Sweep. Winners of the cash prizes must be present at the luncheon on April 25.
Items being accepted free of charge during Recycling Day include: any important or personal documents for shredding; all electronics and computer equipment; all household recyclables, such as newspaper, milk cartons, milk jugs, plastic beverage bottles, aluminum cans, phone books, paperback books, glass bottles and jars and cardboard; and reusable clothing, shoes and children’s toys.
Personnel from Safe Kids of Vance County also will be on hand to conduct automobile child safety seat checks during the Recycling Day event.
