VGCC Golf Tournament sets new record, raising more than $100,000

Vance-Granville Community College’s 31st annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Oxford-based Union Bank, generated $100,318 to help fund scholarships for deserving students and support the mission of the college. That result set a new record as the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history, far surpassing the previous record of $51,000, set just last year.

A total of 164 golfers formed 41 teams to play in either the morning or the afternoon round on May 5, 2015, at Henderson Country Club.

“We greatly appreciate the support of all the golfers and sponsors who helped make this our most successful tournament ever,” said VGCC President Dr. Stelfanie Williams. “We especially want to thank Union Bank for partnering with us as our first-ever presenting sponsor,” added Dr. Williams, who is a member of the board of directors of Union Bank.

“More than $650,000 has now been raised by the VGCC golf tournaments since 1985, because local community and business leaders recognize how important scholarships are to student success, and how important education and training are to the success of our region’s economy,” she said.

At the dinner held to round out the day, VGCC Criminal Justice student Adam Rooker of Norlina, a recipient of endowed scholarships, expressed thanks to those who participated in the tournament. Meanwhile, players took home an assortment of door prizes and participated in a silent auction.

In the morning round, the team of Kenny Abbott, Donald Seifert, Sr., Owen Tharrington and Buddy Thomas took home the first-place trophy. Second place in the morning round went to the team of Henry Murray, David Farey, Randy Hoyle and Rob Wallace, while the team of Bob Hubbard, Sr., Bob Hubbard, Jr., Mike Rainey and Steve Wright placed third.

In the afternoon round, the Institutional Interiors team, which included Mike Baskett, Macy Foster, Tim Hill and Billy T. Stanton, finished in first place. The Winston International team — Randy Hoyle, Bryan Rainey, Randy Weary and Robert Winston — came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to the Rose Oil team of Chip Watkins, George Watkins, Tripp Watkins and Chick Young.

Mike McKoon of the M.R. Williams team took the longest-drive prize on Hole 1 in the morning round, while Matt Woodlief had the longest drive in the afternoon. Steve Wright won the seniors’ longest-drive prize in the morning, and Macy Foster won that prize in the afternoon.
