Vance-Granville Community College recently organized a clothing drive to benefit the patients at Murdoch Developmental Center, located in Butner.
The college’s Sustainability Outreach Subcommittee collected gently used clothes and shoes for both children and adults this spring, and received donations from faculty, staff and students. Geraldine Cash, the administrative assistant for VGCC’s South Campus and chair of the subcommittee, presented the donations to officials from Murdoch Developmental Center in May.
“We collected approximately 20 boxes full of clothing,” Cash said. “Americans send 10.5 million tons of clothing to landfills each year. We can make a positive environmental impact by donating clothes instead of discarding them.”
One of the purposes of the VGCC Sustainability Committee, of which the subcommittee is a part, is to build awareness of efficient, environmentally-friendly practices among college faculty, staff, and students. Sustainability is also one of the key components of the college’s “Vanguard Vision” strategic plan.
