In addition to supporting several non-profit agencies, your United Way is working hard to promote reading among third grade students in Vance County. This effort was began two years ago, headed up by Board member Michele Burgess. Kicking off this reading effort, Ms. Burgess helped to organize the first of what is hoped to be an annual Reading Rally at the Skateeum in Henderson. Third graders from all of Vance Counties schools come together for a fun event focusing on the importance of reading. Activities have included the football and basketball teams from local high schools, cheer squads, pep bands – all stressing the importance of reading.

To date over three thousand books have been purchased and/or donated and delivered to third grade students. In the recent “Read Across America” program, third grade students were treated to a story time with such celebrities as the current Miss North Carolina, Dr. Stelfanie Edwards, President of Vance Granville Community College and BoHo the Clown!

Your United Way has been funding local non-profit agencies in our area through your donations during the past forty-six years. “Funding for United Way comes from the community – local citizens and businesses,” says Nancy Gray, Executive Director, “Those same dollars are returned to the community through various non-profit agencies in our community.” When asked if United Way receives funding from governmental agencies, Gray said, “No. Our funds come directly from the community. Without community support, we cannot function.”
