VGCC invites community to Advanced Manufacturing Day October 2nd, 2015

Vance-Granville Community College will hold an “Advanced Manufacturing Day” event on Friday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The public is invited to attend and to learn more about the current state of manufacturing.

Local manufacturers and equipment vendors will provide demonstrations and information highlighting new techniques and new employment opportunities. Attendees will learn about the types of careers available in the region’s industries and the technical skills required to succeed in such careers.

Representatives of VGCC programs that provide education and training related to advanced manufacturing will also be on hand. These include curriculum programs that make up the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Skills Center — Electrical Systems Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Welding Technology — as well as the Customized Training/Industry Services, Heavy Equipment Operator and Bioprocess Technology programs.

Event organizers hope to develop a pipeline of highly trained and skilled employees. “By working together during and after Advanced Manufacturing Day, VGCC and industry partners will begin to address the skilled labor shortages, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing, and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry,” said Ken Wilson, project manager for the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant at VGCC, which supports advanced manufacturing training.

The event is one of many across the country celebrating “National Manufacturing Day” on Oct. 2.
