Evening introductory Carpentry course offered at VGCC

A course that introduces students to the carpentry trade will be offered soon by Vance-Granville Community College. “Carpentry I” is scheduled to be held on Monday through Thursday evenings from 6 until 10 p.m., March 16 through June 28, on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Students will learn about proper safety techniques, equipment and building materials, blueprint reading, floor systems, wall systems, ceiling and roof framing, ceiling joists, and envelope systems. The 235-hour course includes both classroom instruction and hands-on activities.

Students will receive NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification for successful completion of modules taught in the Core Curriculum (Safety) and Carpentry curriculum. NCCER is a national construction education foundation whose credentials are recognized across the country.

The course has been approved for funding through the “NCWorks Job Driven Initiative” (JDI) grant. VGCC’s programs as part of the JDI are all designed to lead to industry-recognized or state-regulated credentials, and to prepare students for various entry-level jobs that address the needs of local employers. The grant is set to expire on June 30.

The cost of this course is $185.25 plus the cost of the textbook.

Scholarships that will pay for registration fees, certification fees, books and necessary supplies are available to students who qualify through the JDI grant. Students receiving such funding through this grant must attend an HRD/Pathways to Carpentry course, on Monday-Thursday, March 7-15, from 6 until 10 p.m. Participants must also have either a high school diploma or high school equivalency.

Since space is limited, prospective students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Registration can be completed online at www.vgcc.edu/oex or in person at any VGCC campus.
